HYFR: An Ode To Houston, Texas

December 26, 2011

Hip-Hop/ Entertainment

As I ride through the south side of Houston, I can not help but feel nostalgic as I instantly am placed back at Friendly High School, circa 2001-2003. After school was over and before football, wrestling or baseball practice, I could be found in the school parking lot bumping either three things. You would either hear the deep bass and catchy hooks from Three Six Mafia, go-go from TCB, UCB, Raw Image or Back, or you would hear the screwed up and slowed down sounds from Houston, Texas.

My twin and I religiously listened to anything H-Town, that includes; Big Moe, DJ Michael Watts, Lil Keke, ESG, UGK, Lil Flip, Swishahouse, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Chamillionare and a host of others. In my personal opinion, Houston has its own style of music that resounds loud and clear in the city of lean and that makes it a place that music heads must appreciate.

In present day, as we drove around the city, we listened to the radio and heard countless songs that could be considered classics that all originated from Houston. We even heard Drake remix one of his recent hits off of Take Care, “HYFR” and resurrected a H-Town vet ESG, whom layed down a verse on the remix (see below). As ESG stated “shouts out to Young Money for bringing that old money through”.

As I pay homage to the city of Houston, I want to bless all my Fligher Education readers with Slim Thug’s most recent mixtape – Houston. Houston, we love you!
